local beach Carabassi Playa and experience a mystical
event transpiring
Hogueras is a four
day festival with the San Juan Bonfires held every
year celebrating the arrival of Summer on the shortest
night and longest day of the year. Families, men,
woman young and old take to the beach building bonfires
from logs to bits of old household furniture and
as night falls, hundreds of bonfires are lit. Celebrations
include drinking, eating, dancing and swimming in
the sea.
There is also a tradition
to jump over a bonfire three times and the person
will be cleansed and purified with their problems
burned away.
