On Sunday 2nd October 2016, Gran Alacant celebrated the 9th edition of the 10k race “Cross Popular” held in honour of the Spanish gold medalist Abel Antón who in 1998 became the first Spanish runner to win the London Marathon.
Over 250 runners got help on wheels from the bicycle escort team whilst “Dance Life” performed dance routines in front of the awaiting crowd.
Mohamed Bocheha won the 10k race with 33m 25sec (1st Veteran A category) followed in over a minute later in 2nd position with Luis Minarro Ayala from Santa Pola´s Athletic Club with 34m 28sec (1st Senior Masculine category) and close behind in 3rd place Norwegian Hjemly Haakon Helge (1st Veteran B category) with 34 mins and 38secs.
Presentation of the prizes and awards took place after the oldest runner Jesus Serna Moya at 86 years completed the course. Among those handing out the awards were Yolanda Seva, Santa Pola´s Mayoress and Carlos from “Zafiro Tours travel agency”.
There were also races for youngsters and children after the awards. Organised by European Residents Neighbourhood Association, Santa Pola’s Athletics Club and Santa Pola Town Council.
Every year Spanish gold medalist Abel Antón and his nephew Raul Martinez Anton participate in the annual event, although on this occasion were unable to attend.
